Banner Declawed KittiesDear Friends,

There are times in life that we must lose some battles on the way to winning the war.

Today we lost a big one.

As you know, there is the bill in NY that would ban declawing in that state, if passed.

The NYSVMS, Long Island Veterinary Medical Association, and other NY veterinary associations successfully stopped our bill.  Some of the Senators had some “concerns” about our cat protection bill and obviously believed the NYSVMS’s disgusting propaganda about declawing. The bill was not included in the final Rules report in the Senate. Basically it was left behind because some of the Senators raised some last minute concerns about it.

We all worked so hard on trying to get this bill passed so that it would protect all kitties in NY from this inhumane and unnecessary procedure.

My mom and I worked every waking hour on this bill and we are devastated that some of the NY Senators listened to the ones who make up evil excuses as to why they should be able to keep mutilating cats and making money from it.

We are also very angry that these “doctors” who took an oath to help and heal animals, would fight so hard to be able to keep declawing, and yet not work really hard to help spread awareness about declawing, help repair the paws of declawed cats that they destroyed, and help to find homes for all the declawed cats that are in shelters and rescues because of the harm they caused to these cats paws and lives. If these veterinary associations and “doctors”  had put all their time and money into campaigns that would go out to NY cat owners about the humane alternatives and how declawing always harms a cat and is inhumane, mutilating, painful, and very unnecessary, then so many cats would be saved.

But the bottom line is that we know what is important to them. We aren’t $tupid. None of those “doctors” should be using their skilled hands and their lasers, guillotine choppers, or scalpels to mutilate cat paws. Period. They know that there are always humane alternative$.

Declawing is NOT a medical procedure as they like to call it and say that they don’t want “government or social media” taking that away from them. It’s a mutilating procedure. It is an ELECTIVE, NON-Therapeutic inhumane amputating surgery that many of them make great money from declawing cats. Including the President of the NYSVMS, “Dr” Susan Wylegala who makes $66 for each cat toe that she amputates at her practice in NY and told her 5000 vet members to call the legislators and tell them that our bill is a “detriment to animals.”

The President of the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association, “Dr” Nicole Paccione-Gerbe, who asked her vet members that even if they personal believe declawing is bad and wrong, to go against their convictions and call the NY legislators and say they oppose our bill. She make $38 for every cat toe that she amputates at her NY practice. Now is a time that we must get even stronger in this cause because we won’t give up and will fight this good fight next year.

The sad part about this is that the biggest loser are all the kitties in NY that they will harm, mutilate, and ruin their lives

And to those who say they are opposed to declawing but remained silent on this important bill, ASPCA, North Shore Animal League, and Cornell Veterinary College, your silence helped to allow this unnecessary animal cruelty to go on for another year. With your support we would have been stronger in passing this bill.

Shame on you for putting ANYTHING before the welfare of cats and looking the other way for this bill. You will always be remembered for this cowardly silent stance that now allows cats to continue to be cruelly mutilated.

To those who helped like Alley Cat Allies, we are forever grateful. You are the shining example of an organization that is truly about helping animals no matter what. You aren’t afraid of losing contracts or donations from veterinarians who like to declaw cats. You are true advocates for all animals and think of their needs first. Thank you to all the 135 ethical NY veterinarians who don’t destroy kitties paws and who supported this important bill and know that declawing is wrong because it goes against your oath to help and heal. You know that there are always humane alternatives to this barbaric procedure.

Thank you to all the shelters, rescues, and humane organizations in NY that supported the bill.

Thank you to the Paw Project that started this bill and to Rep. Linda Rosenthal for being the first to sponsor it and Senator Joseph Griffo for co-sponsoring it.

And thank you to all of you who called the NY legislators to say you support this important cat protection bill, and who worked hard to get the word out to animal lovers everywhere.

We someday will win this fight but we must get more help.

So please ask your friends, family, and co-workers to join us and be on the right side of cat history and end this dark and very evil chapter in the American veterinary profession.

We must defeat this enemy and protect all cats from these “doctors” who still want to do this evil and inhumane, mutilating procedure to them.

Good always wins over evil but sometimes it just takes time.

One thing all of you can do is to respectfully ask your own veterinarian if they will stop declawing. Here is a note you can send to them. [button href=”https://citythekitty.org/what-you-can-do-to-help-end-declawing/” color=”green” newwindow=”yes”] Note to your vet that declaws cats[/button]

If they won’t stop declawing then please find a new ethical veterinarian that doesn’t declaw cats. There is a list of them on my website, No Declaw Vets in US & Canada

PawProject.org and Declaw.com have lists of no-declaw veterinarians.
