How The CVMA and the California VMB Stopped The 2019 Cat Protection Bill
Multiple animal medical and welfare organizations have issued statements against declawing, including the American Association of Feline Practitioners, the American Animal Hospital Association, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. Fourteen jurisdictions have seen fit to ban the procedure. Even a major veterinary hospital chain, VCA, stopped declawing a year ago throughout Canada.
Now it is time for California to pass this important legislation and join the worldwide humane movement against declawing.
A Michigan Shelter Owner With A Master’s Degree Who Condones Declawing
Sindy Buford said that if a declaw is done properly and the appropriate litter is used for two weeks, then they don’t have a problem with it.
My mom asked Sindy Buford if the person educating her about declawing was her vet, Dr Borders.
Sindy Buford said, yes.
Do These Sponsors Know and Care That the NYSVMS Supports Feline Paw Mutilation?
The NYSVMS is the veterinary association that keeps stopping the anti-declawing legislation in New York. They want their vets to be able to keep performing this inhumane, mutilating, and unnecessary procedure. Declawing is a big money maker for vets in America, including in New York.
The NYSVMS is having a veterinary conference in Tarrytown, NY in May 2018 and have sponsors who probably don’t know what the NYSVMS is doing to stop us from banning a very inhumane and unnecessary amputation procedure that is done to millions of innocent cats in New York state and America each year.
I think these sponsors, TD Bank, Boehringer Ingelheim, Simmons, Monarch Business Consulting, and Best Pet Rx should know that the NYSVMS passionately supports keeping this barbaric toe bone and claw amputation procedure legal.
I sent all of them an email and so far only TD Bank responded. (Emails are at the end of this story.)
Please send respectful and educational notes to each of these sponsors so that they know about the sneaky NYSVMS’s actions to keep this inhumane procedure going in New York state. We know all these companies have worked hard to have a trustworthy and good reputation for their businesses. If you get a response from any of them, please send it to me at citythekitty@gmail.com Remember to take a screenshot of your comment as documentation. #TAKETHEHIGHROAD
We would hate to see their good reputations damaged by supporting the NYSVMS.
She’s a dreamer and she’s not the only one
To my colleagues around the world I just want to say the following: I see people beginning to dislike (hate is such a strong word) veterinarians, accusing them of just wanting the money.
Well, let us all show the world that we became vets because we love animals.
Yes, we need to make a living, but not at the expense of those animals we have vowed to help.
AVMA Veterinarian in IL deceives Clients About Declawing
It is OPTIONAL to get any pain meds for your cat and their declaw surgery. The only reason we declaw the back is if they have leather (furniture) and they are totally destroying them or if someone is on a blood thinner. But typically if they are just scratching at something , declawing the front two work out just fine.”
One of the many declawing factories in America
“Most people will just have the front claws taken out , the only time we would recommend having the rear claws removed also is there was a small baby at home or if you have leather furniture but if that isn’t an issue we would recommend the front.”
“We do several declaws a day. There is no age limit for a declaw.”
“Yep they should be ok unless it’s an outdoor cat and we don’t recommend doing it because they learned how to use their claws . I got mine declawed at 3 yrs and she was completely fine. The 4 paws is ok too? “yea that’s what I did on my cat. It’s more common to get the front ones done just because the front ones are what they claw with and tear your furniture up with but you could get all four done.”
“there’s no consequences or anything like that. Why people think it’s inhumane is just because it’s like cutting their knuckle off, which it isn’t, we’re taking the nail out of the cat and that’s where a lot of people think it’s inhumane but personally I don’t just because indoor cats don’t use their nails that much and but if it’s an outdoor cat and catches mice and all sorts of stuff like that, then yea I could see it, but indoor cats don’t use their nails much for anything.”
The Big, Ugly, Unethical Business of Amputating Cat Toes & Claws
“We can’t declaw a dog. Dog’s nails are different than cat nails and dogs nails have veins in the nails. Cats don’t have veins inside their nails,” said the employee at this veterinary practice after asking the veterinarian.
Houston Humane Society Declaws Cats. Update- The HHS stopped declawing cats in 2021.
But we really do have a problem. when an organization that is ALL about being humane to animals, is declawing cats that people adopt AND at their Houston Humane Society Clinic and they don’t counsel people about what declawing is or about the HUMANE alternatives. They are deceiving cat owners to think that it is humane and ok for a cat.

This is a horrific story about 3 kitties named Teeger, Abby, and Ryder, whose lives have been tragically ruined because of being declawed.
