I received a note from a young person the other day.
It started with, “My mom got my cat declawed today and I feel sick.”
My heart dropped as I kept reading the sad note.
They went on to say that they tried so hard to get her to change her mind and even promised that they would trim their cat’s claws every week or two and teach their cat how to use a scratching post.
They said that their mom had the cat declawed because of her furniture and because she was afraid that their cat would harm their older cat who was declawed when they were really young because she didn’t want the kids and dog to be scratched.
They said that their cat is the sweetest cat.
They said that they hate feeling this way towards their mom but they are so angry and feel so little because they couldn’t do anything to stop it from happening. They said that their mom isn’t a bad person but that she just doesn’t understand that declawing doesn’t benefit a cat’s life.
They said, “I wish she did understand and I wish she would’ve listened to me.”
They are truly devastated. They said that they are hungry but don’t even want to eat.
They said that they keep crying.
They asked me, “What can I do to feel better about this whole thing?”

This kid already knows the difference between right and wrong.
This kid already knows about doing the right thing.
There are probably thousands of kids out there like this one with parents who are being deceived by their unethical, pro-declaw vet. Parents who have trusted “doctors” of veterinary medicine that say declawing is ok and who never counsel them about the humane alternatives or that declawing is very harmful and mutilating to a cat. Or never tell them that cats need their toes and claws for so many aspects of their health and well being.
So I wrote them back and tried to give them some encouraging words and thanked them for helping with this cause and being a true hero.
Let’s hope that when this special one grows up, they will live in a country where declawing is banned. A country where no child has to go through such a traumatic and heartbreaking experience like this to see their beloved, perfect little pet go through such a cruel, unnecessary and inhumane procedure.
Please give this amazing kid lots of cyber love and a BIG thank you for trying to inspire their mom to do the right thing.
They are the ones who are already making the world a better place for all.
