December 2020 update to this story. AAHA took legal action to get us to remove their information about how they address declawing from some of
Currently I have 19 adult cats, 31% of those cats are declawed (6) and all six of those cats are primarily unadoptable.
Four of them will not use the litter box at all, but are extremely sweet.
One is very reactive/defensive and unhandleable, and one is 15 years old but should be able to find a retirement home (hopefully).
Two of the cats have already had bone fragments and regrowth removed from their paws, the others we are still working on get in for exams/options.
The two that have had the surgery still aren’t using their boxes and we are trying prozac to help retrain their brains not to associate the litter box with pain.

Here’s our list of organizations, companies, and people who are on the right side and wrong side of history in regards to declawing.
We applaud all the tireless work that the director/founder, staff, and volunteers of The A.N.N.A Shelter do to help animals in Erie, PA.
Unfortunately The ANNA Shelter also performs declawing in their WELLNESS Centers.
As far as we know, there are only 2 animal shelters in America that perform and profit from declawing in their Wellness Centers/Clinics. The other one is the Houston Humane Society.
Declawing is inhumane, mutilating, and always harms the long term health and well-being of a cat.
The ANNA Shelter’s WELLNESS CENTERS no longer declaw cats, but 14 other vet practices in the Erie, PA area will.
There are around 26,000 veterinary practices in America.
Around 21,000 of these practices declaw cats.
Most of these declawing vet practices are still using much needed PPE (masks, gloves, and gowns) to declaw cats and perform elective procedures despite national efforts to conserve this protective medical gear and despite the calls from the AVMA, state veterinary associations, healthcare organizations, hospitals, and state officials, to cease all routine surgeries and services.
These declawing vets are putting profits first and also defying nationwide pleas for sheltering in place, by allowing their clients to come to their clinics for these elective, non-therapeutic procedures.
These declawing vets are using precious PPE to declaw cats and this cruelty towards cats could contribute to more COVID-19 deaths.
In the midst of a crisis where everyone is pulling together to save each other, many declawing veterinarians remain selfish.. Despite worldwide efforts to conserve protective medical gear like surgical masks, gowns, and gloves, some declawing vets are still offering non-therapeutic surgeries in order to maintain their profits.
This selfish behavior risks infection with Covid19 in their staff, clients, and worst of all, hospital workers who are in desperate need of these limited resources.
