“We understand that times have changed.
Today people are concerned about the world’s largest animals like never before.
So we too must change.”
Why can’t the the veterinary medical organizations, veterinarians, and the veterinary universities finally do the right thing and speak out 100% against declawing and stop performing it?
Wouldn’t that be amazing to see headlines from all these organizations and veterinarians saying things like…
WE UNDERSTAND TIMES HAVE CHANGED AND PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELFARE OF CATS LIKE NEVER BEFORE. SO WE TOO MUST CHANGE.
WE ARE ANNOUNCING THAT WE WILL BE COMPLETELY HONORING THE OATH WE TOOK TO JUST HELP AND HEAL ANIMALS. WE WILL BE ADVOCATES FOR ALL ANIMALS AND LOOK OUT FOR THEIR NEEDS FIRST.
WE WILL STOP THE INHUMANE PRACTICE OF DECLAWING… COMPLETELY.
WE WILL INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION OF VETERINARIANS TO DO THE SAME AND PROTECT THESE MAJESTIC ANIMALS AND MAKE SURE ALL CATS ARE SAFE FROM THIS MUTILATING PROCEDURE.
WE WILL WORK ON INNOVATIVE AND EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGNS FOR CAT OWNERS TO LEARN HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENT THE HUMANE ALTERNATIVES.
WE WILL EDUCATE THEM ABOUT THE FACTS ON DECLAWING SO THEY KNOW IT IS A VERY HARMFUL PROCEDURE FOR A CAT’S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING AND WHY IT SHOULD END.
The big veterinary associations, veterinary colleges, and animal organizations (AVMA, AAHA, AAFP, CORNELL, ASPCA, North Shore Animal League) already know it’s wrong by saying it should be a “last resort”, that they are “strongly opposed” to it, or against it.
But they are all afraid of losing money whether it is from due paying members or donations so they have that wiggle room (immune compromised or health reasons) in their declawing positions.
The bottom line, $$$$, is more important that the welfare of cats.
Declawing is never necessary. It does NOT keep a cat in a home. It doesn’t need to be done for human health reasons or immune-compromised individuals.
Pro-declaw vets say there is a demand for it from cat owners so they must keep acquiescing to their needs. These cat owners are either unwilling to take the time to work with the humane alternatives, lazy, or are not educated about how bad this procedure is for a cat.
These pro-declaw “doctors” wouldn’t remove all the teeth on a dog if it’s chewing up their pillows or shoes and this dog owner requested it. They wouldn’t amputate the toes and claws on a dog if it was digging on and ruining the owners new hardwood floors. They would say these dog owners need to take the time and train the dogs to rectify this unwanted behavior.
Yet most pro-declaw vets simply book the exam/appointment, happily take a cat owners money, and perform this mutilating and inhumane amputation surgery on thousands of cats.
Because greed is stronger than compassion for cats in most pro-declaw “doctors.”
And most pro-declaw vets are obviously bigger dog lovers than cat lovers.
